The Zone Technique Explained: How 6 Body Systems Affect Your Pain

Most people walk into a chiropractic clinic expecting someone to crack their back and send them home. And at most clinics, that is exactly what happens.

At Chiropractor Norwich, we do something different. Before any adjustment, we assess your body using a system called the Zone Technique. It is the reason our patients often say things like “no one has ever checked me like that before.”

Here is what it is, how it works, and why it matters for your pain and your health.

What Is the Zone Technique?

The Zone Technique was developed by Dr Peter Goldman, building on the original Zone Therapy created by Dr Thurman Fleet in 1931. It is a chiropractic method that assesses the body as six interconnected systems, all controlled by the brain and spinal cord.

Think of your brain as the control centre of a power station. It sends signals down your spinal cord and out through your nerves to every organ, muscle, and cell in your body. When those signals are clear and balanced, your body works as it should. When they are disrupted, systems start to struggle. Pain, fatigue, poor digestion, disturbed sleep. These are all signs that one or more zones are out of balance.

The Six Zones

Zone 1: Glandular. Controls your thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive glands. When this zone is disrupted, you may experience fatigue, hormonal imbalance, poor energy, or difficulty concentrating.

Zone 2: Eliminative. Governs your body’s ability to remove waste through the sinuses, lungs, kidneys, bladder, and bowel. Disruption here can show up as sinus congestion, bloating, skin issues, or sluggish digestion.

Zone 3: Nervous. Manages your entire nervous system, including your eyes, ears, and sense organs. Imbalance may present as anxiety, poor sleep, sensitivity to stress, or nerve pain.

Zone 4: Digestive. Controls how your body breaks down and absorbs food. Disruption often looks like bloating, acid reflux, food sensitivities, or inconsistent appetite.

Zone 5: Muscular. Governs all muscles, including your heart. Imbalance here can cause chronic tightness, weakness, poor circulation, or recurring muscle injuries that never seem to fully heal.

Zone 6: Skeletal. Controls your bones, joints, and connective tissue. When this zone is out of balance, you may notice joint stiffness, poor posture, slow recovery from injury, or pain that moves around the body.

How the Assessment Works

During your visit, Dr Luke will assess specific points on the back of your head. These points correspond to the six zones and indicate which systems are under stress. It is gentle, precise, and takes just a few minutes.

Once the disrupted zones are identified, the adjustment is targeted to restore balance to those specific systems. This is not a generic spinal manipulation. It is a focused correction based on what your body actually needs on that day.

This is why two patients can walk in with identical back pain and receive completely different treatments. Because the cause of the pain is different, even when the symptom looks the same.

Why Does This Matter for Pain?

Most pain is not caused by a single joint being “out of place.” Pain is a product of how your entire system is functioning. A muscle that will not relax because the nervous zone is overstimulated. A joint that keeps stiffening because the muscular zone is not supporting it properly. A disc that is under pressure because the skeletal zone is compensating for something elsewhere in the body.

By assessing and balancing the zones, we address the deeper reason the pain exists. Not just the joint, not just the muscle, but the system behind it all.

This is also why many of our patients report improvements beyond their original complaint. They came in for back pain, but their sleep improved. They came in for headaches, but their digestion settled. That is not a coincidence. It is what happens when the body’s control system starts working properly again.
