What Are the Red Flags for Sciatica?

Most sciatica is a mechanical problem that responds well to chiropractic. But certain symptoms require urgent medical assessment, not chiropractic treatment.

Urgent Red Flags

When to Seek Emergency Medical Care

⚠️ Go to A&E or call 999 immediately if you experience any of the following alongside back or leg pain: loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the inner thighs or groin (saddle anaesthesia), progressive weakness in both legs, sciatica following significant trauma, back pain with unexplained weight loss or fever, or sciatica in someone with a history of cancer.

These symptoms may indicate cauda equina syndrome or another serious spinal pathology that requires urgent medical intervention.

🚨

Cauda Equina Syndrome

Loss of bladder or bowel control with back or leg pain is a potential cauda equina emergency. This requires immediate A&E assessment, not a chiropractic appointment.

⚠️

Saddle Anaesthesia

Numbness in the inner thighs, groin, or around the genitals alongside leg pain suggests possible cauda equina syndrome.

🚑

Progressive Bilateral Weakness

Increasing weakness in both legs simultaneously is an emergency. This is different from muscle fatigue or general leg heaviness.

🔍

Post-Trauma Sciatica

Sciatica that developed after a fall, road accident, or significant trauma requires imaging before any manual treatment.

What Is Not a Red Flag

Normal Sciatica Presentations

One-Sided Leg Pain

Pain down one leg from the lower back or buttock is typical sciatica. Not a red flag.

Foot Numbness or Tingling

Numbness or tingling in one foot is a common sciatica symptom. Not a red flag.

Worsens with Sitting

Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting is typical mechanical sciatica. Not a red flag.

Improves with Walking

Sciatica that eases slightly when walking is a common presentation. Not a red flag.

Red Flag Screening

How Chiropractor Norwich Screens Every Patient

All patients at Chiropractor Norwich are screened for red flags as part of the initial assessment. If the team identifies anything that requires medical investigation rather than chiropractic treatment, they will tell you clearly and direct you to the appropriate service. We never proceed with treatment if there are unresolved red flags.
